Children : Teaching Your Children To Budget
- If you are thinking of taking your children somewhere really special (might be a holiday or expensive outing) encourage them to help you save for it. Make a money box out of an old jar / container and make it a family activity of putting loose change into it. This will remind the children to be careful with their money and remind them of the special event that is coming up that the family are saving for.
- Involve your children in the family budget and financial goals. They will then be less likely to keep nagging you for things if they understand what it is you are trying to achieve as a family.
- Don’t keep dishing money out to your children. Set them a weekly allowance / pocket money and teach them how to handle this correctly. See Saving Money Tips Children : Pocket Money / Allowances
- Teach your children to save for things they want that you aren’t prepared to buy for them. They will then understand how important it is to budget and save, and to wait and pay cash for their wishes.
- Teach your children the difference between a want and a need. If they can learn this early in life you can set them up well for the future. The best way to do this is to say ‘no’ to them when they keep nagging you to buy things for them that they don’t need to have.
